Why you get an MP4 as well

The GIF format is limited to a 256-colour palette, which is unkind to skin tones — subtle gradients across a face are exactly what palette quantization handles worst, and it is why swapped GIFs can look banded even when the underlying swap is clean.

The MP4 has no such limit, so it looks noticeably better and is usually a fraction of the size. Most platforms that appear to accept "GIFs" — including the major social networks — actually convert them to video on upload anyway, so posting the MP4 often gets you a better result through the same UI.

What makes a good source GIF

Reaction GIFs are typically short loops of a fairly front-facing person, which is close to the ideal case. Where it gets harder is the same place video does: frames with fast motion, or a face turned sharply away.

Frame count matters for time, not for price at the image tier — but a very long GIF is really a video, and trimming to the section that carries the joke usually improves the result as well as the file size.

Making your own reaction images

The usual pattern is to take an existing well-known loop and put your own face, or a friend's, into it — the humour comes from the recognisable clip carrying an unexpected face.

Source-face advice is the same as everywhere else: a clear, front-facing, well-lit photo will outperform a dramatic one. The GIF supplies the expression and the motion; your source only needs to supply identity.

Where to post which file

Group chats and messaging apps generally handle a GIF fine, and that is the file to reach for when you want it to autoplay inline the way a reaction image should.

For anywhere with a feed — the major social platforms, forums that accept video — the MP4 is the better upload. It is sharper, dramatically smaller, and those platforms were going to transcode a GIF into video on their own anyway, so handing them the video skips a lossy step.

If you need a still instead, any frame of the swapped result works as a reaction image; the swap is applied uniformly across frames, so there is no single "good" frame to hunt for.
