Why stylized faces are the hard case

Face detection and face swapping are both built around the proportions of real human faces — eye spacing, nose length, jaw width. Anime and cartoon styles deliberately break those proportions: eyes are enormous, noses are minimal, chins are pointed. The further a style departs from real anatomy, the less reliably a face is detected at all, and the less naturally a real face maps onto it.

In practice this produces a clean gradient. Semi-realistic and detailed anime styles, or 3D-animated characters with broadly human proportions, work well. Highly abstract or chibi styles frequently will not detect a face, and when they do, the result tends to look like a photo pasted over a drawing rather than a character with a new face.

The direction matters

Real face onto a semi-realistic animated character is the more forgiving direction, and the one most people want. The character supplies the pose and the scene; your face supplies identity.

Animated face onto a real photo is harder and rarely convincing, because a flat, stylized face carries none of the lighting and skin texture the surrounding photograph has. It can be an interesting effect, but it will not read as seamless.

Getting a better result

Pick artwork where the character is drawn close to front-facing and occupies a decent share of the frame — the same rule as photos, for the same reason. Detailed, higher-resolution art beats a small low-res screenshot.

If nothing is detected, the style is likely too far from human proportions. Trying a more realistically-drawn image of the same character is usually the fastest fix.

Can I put my face on an anime character?+

Yes, and this is the direction that works best. Semi-realistic and detailed styles do well; highly stylized or chibi art often will not detect a face at all.

Why was no face detected in my anime image?+

Detection is built around real human facial proportions. Very large eyes and minimal noses can fall outside what it recognises. A more realistically drawn image of the same character usually works.

Can I go the other way — a cartoon face onto a photo?+

You can, but it is much less convincing. A flat drawn face carries none of the lighting or skin texture of the surrounding photograph, so it reads as an effect rather than a seamless swap.

Does it work on animated clips?+

Yes, the same frame-by-frame process applies at 2 credits per second, with the same caveats about stylization.
