Taking the good face from a second shot

If you took a burst, the usual move is to take the person's face from the frame where they did look good and bring it into the frame where everyone else did. Because both frames come from the same session, the lighting, camera and distance already match — which is exactly the condition under which a swap looks invisible rather than composited.

This is the single highest-success-rate use of a face swapper, and it is worth doing before reaching for anything more elaborate.

Adding someone who was not in the photo

Putting a person who missed the shot into it works, but it is a harder problem and worth setting expectations on. The face itself will swap cleanly onto whichever stand-in you place them over. What will not automatically agree is the lighting: a face photographed indoors under warm light, dropped into an outdoor group shot in overcast daylight, will blend at the edges but still read as belonging to a different scene.

You get much closer by choosing a source photo shot in similar light and at a similar angle to the position they will occupy in the group.

What stays untouched

Only pixels belonging to a face you selected are altered. The background, clothing, hands, hair outside the face region and every unselected person come through unchanged, which is what makes this safe to use on a photo you actually care about.

You are charged per face swapped, so fixing one person in a photo of twelve costs 1 credit.

Large groups and the resolution problem

Wide group shots — a wedding party, a class photo, a whole team — run into a limit that is about pixels rather than about how many people the tool can find. Images are normalized to 1920px on the long edge, so in a shot forty people wide, each face occupies very few pixels indeed.

A face can be detected at that size and still lack the detail to swap convincingly, which is the honest failure mode: you get a result, but it looks soft compared to the faces around it. The larger the group, the more this bites.

The workaround is to crop before uploading. If the person you need to fix is in the left third of a wide shot, crop to that third, swap, and the same face now occupies several times as many pixels. Recomposing afterwards is more work but the difference in quality is not subtle.
